Residents of Windlestone hoping to post letters or Christmas cards in their local post box were left disappointed and inconvenienced this week, when the post box at Rookery Gardens was found to be missing on Monday morning. Believed to have been stolen during Sunday evening only the metal pillar that it once stood on marks the spot where the post box stood for several decades.
It is the second time that the small community of Windlestone have suffered at the hands of post box thieves. The post box at Mill Cottages was also stolen a few weeks ago. One theory is that historic post boxes are being stolen and sold to private collectors.
Post box thefts affect communities greatly, not only in terms of the inconvenience and missing correspondence taken from the boxes, but also the loss of an important part of community history.
Anyone with information about the recent thefts are urged to contact the Police.
